Healthy Summer Treats

It’s officially summer and the heat is on!  Summertime brings great opportunities to be healthy: outdoor walks, jogs, bike rides and play time in the park.  But it also brings some sweet temptations as well.  And while the occasional ice cream cone will not hurt you, most days it’s best to opt for a healthier treat.

But don’t worry – you can get your nutrition in a tasty summer treat!

One of my go to snacks has always been almonds.  I’m a bit weird in that I love to eat them in their natural unsalted state.  A little bit of almonds provides tons of healthy unsaturated fat, protein and a multitude of vitamins and minerals.  And so it’s no surprise they are a go-to ingredient when I’m making healthy summer treats!

Super Simple Frozen Banana Almond Treats

There are 2 versions of these treats that I adore.

Version 1: Cinnamon Greek Yogurt with Almonds

Ingredients: Bananas, Plain Greek Yogurt, Cinnamon, Sliced Almonds

Directions:

  1. Peel and slice bananas into 1/2 inch pieces.
  2. Mix 1 teaspoon (more or less – to taste) cinnamon into 6 ounces of plain Greek Yogurt.
  3. Top each banana slice with a healthy dab of Greek yogurt and top with sliced almonds.
  4. Place the treats on a freezer safe plate and pop them in the freezer for 45 min to 1 hour.

Version 2 – Almond Butter and Chocolate

Ingredients: Bananas, Almond Butter, Chocolate Chips

Directions:

  1. Peel and slice bananas into 1/2 inch pieces
  2. Top each banana slice with a healthy dollop of almond butter and 1 chocolate chip.
  3. Place the treats on a freezer safe plate and pop them in the freezer for 45 min to 1 hour.

These are best when eaten right after freezing. You can let them thaw a little bit if you wish, but don’t let them thaw completely or they will become a gooey mess instead of a delicious and refreshing treat!

Super Simple Frozen Almond Greek Yogurt

Ingredients: 1/4 cup plain Greek Yogurt, 2 tablespoons Almond Butter, Almond Milk, Toppings of Choice: Chopped Almonds, Chocolate Chips, Granola, Sprinkles

Directions:

  1. Mix together Greek yogurt and Almond butter until well combined.
  2. Add in a splash of Almond Milk and mix.  Continue adding Almond Milk a bit at a time until you reach a consistency of your liking.  I usually add 1 tablespoon because I like a thicker consistency.
  3. Freeze the mixture for 30 minutes.
  4. Take out of freezer and mix in toppings.
  5. Enjoy!

These sweet treats will cool you off all summer long and keep your body running on healthy!
